Guido Garay Brignardello

He is the world authority on how the most massive stars are born — the ones that live briefly and end in an explosion.

b. 1950Santiago, ChileUniversidad de Chile · CATA

Massive stars — tens of times the Sun's mass — live briefly, die as supernovae and forge almost every heavy element in the universe. How they form remains an open problem: as they grow they emit so much radiation that it should push away the very gas they need to keep growing.

Garay is one of the world's authorities on that problem, and he worked through it entirely from Chile.

01 — Orion

Thirty objects nobody had seen

He was born on 1 July 1950 and entered the Universidad de Chile in 1968. He did his doctorate at Harvard, graduating in 1983. During those years he observed the Orion nebula with the Very Large Array radio telescope and discovered more than thirty objects that turned out to be forming stars.

His fields are ionised gas regions, molecular jets and outflows, massive star formation, and radio-astronomical studies of the interstellar medium. His body of work has accumulated more than 5,600 citations.

From lending the sky to doing the astronomy

Chile has the best skies in the southern hemisphere, which is why it hosts the great international observatories. For a long time that mainly meant being the place where others observed. The creation of centres such as CATA — which Garay directed between 2002 and 2012 — was part of the turn towards a Chilean astronomy with its own research and technology.

his brilliant academic performance and his great scientific productivity, particularly in the exceptional character of his contribution to the mechanism of stellar formation, especially that of massive stars, which has earned international recognition of excellence

Announcement of the 2017 Premio Nacional de Ciencias Exactas, Ministry of Education, translated from Spanish

One never feels deserving of this prize. I owe it to everyone who has collaborated on my scientific work and to all my students, who have always challenged me academically.

What the sources do not quite settle

Documented

He was born on 1 July 1950 and obtained his doctorate at Harvard in 1983.

The Universidad de Chile gives the exact date; the Ministry of Education records «Santiago, 1950». The doctorate year agrees across three sources.

Documented

He received the 2017 Premio Nacional de Ciencias Exactas.

Statement from the Ministry of Education.

Likely

Years of his undergraduate and master's degrees.

The Universidad de Chile only says he entered in 1968. El Mostrador gives an undergraduate degree in 1976 and a master's in 1980 — the latter at Harvard, not in Chile. This could not be resolved, so the entry does not record those years.

Likely

He was born in the Independencia district.

The Spanish Wikipedia says so; the Universidad de Chile and the Ministry say «Santiago». They are not necessarily contradictory, but the institutional version was preferred.
