Ecology and botany

Mary T. Kalin Arroyo

She has spent almost fifty years studying how plants reproduce in the high mountains. Chile made her a citizen by special grace in 2022.

Above three thousand metres, in the Andes, there are flowers. It is counter-intuitive: the cold, the wind and the radiation make insects scarce, and without insects pollination becomes a problem. So high-altitude plants had to solve it in other ways.

Working out how is the task to which a New Zealand-born botanist devoted nearly fifty years at the Universidad de Chile. In 2022, Congress granted her Chilean citizenship by grace.

02 — The research

Cushion plants and a hotspot in central Chile

Her work on reproductive biology and pollination in the high Andes described how plants in those environments combine strategies — self-pollination, compact growth forms such as "cushion plants", synchronised flowering — to reproduce where the margin for error is minimal.

In parallel, her research into the biogeography of the high-Andean flora and of central Chile helped establish the latter as a global biodiversity hotspot: an area with an exceptional concentration of species found nowhere else, and under threat.

03 — The vocation

How she understands it

Being a scientist is not a profession, it is a life.

Mary Kalin Arroyo (2025), translated from Spanish

The 2025 tribute — naming the Ecological Sciences building after her — coincided with the faculty's sixtieth anniversary and her own forty-seventh year at the university. It is, in practice, recognition that a substantial part of Chilean ecology was trained in her laboratory.

04 — Honesty

What the sources do not quite settle

Documented

She received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias Naturales in 2010 and Chilean citizenship by grace in 2022 (Law 21,501).

The Universidad de Chile and official CONICYT coverage agree.

Documented

PhD in Botany from UC Berkeley in 1971, with a postdoctorate alongside Peter Raven.

Three institutional sources agree.

Likely

She was born in New Plymouth, New Zealand.

Only the CONICYT coverage specifies the city; the rest of the sources say only "New Zealand". That is why the entry records the country.

Unconfirmed

She sat on the Ministry of Science's Climate Change Scientific Advisory Committee.

The official list of members of that committee was checked and her name does not appear in any of its cohorts. It is not published as fact.

Unconfirmed

The exact year the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity was founded.

The Universidad de Chile says she took over as director in 2006; other sources speak of it having been founded "in the 2000s", without being precise.
