Mónica Rubio López

With ALMA she found a stellar nursery in a dwarf galaxy three million light years away, under conditions where it should not exist.

As a teenager she spent Saturdays in El Arrayán helping to build an observatory, and at night they would stay up looking at the stars. "I used to wonder what those little bright dots were," she said decades later.

In 2015 she published in Nature the discovery of star-forming clouds in a dwarf galaxy three million light-years away, under conditions where theory did not expect to find them.

01 — The discovery

Why a dwarf galaxy matters

Stars form inside clouds of molecular gas, and those clouds are usually detected through the carbon monoxide they contain. But carbon and oxygen are heavy elements: in metal-poor galaxies —such as the dwarf Wolf-Lundmark-Melotte— there is almost none, and the signal disappears. The question was whether the clouds were not there either, or whether they were there and simply could not be seen.

With ALMA, Rubio and her team found them. It matters because those metal-poor galaxies resemble the early universe: understanding how stars are born there brings us closer to how the first ones were born.

03 — Those who come next

What she says about women in astronomy

Talent has no gender. Abilities have no gender. Girls and young women need to be encouraged to choose this career.

Mónica Rubio, 2021, translated from Spanish

In the same interview she added something less often quoted and more concrete: "For me, as a woman, it mattered not only to be a scientist, but also to start a family." It is the kind of sentence that rarely appears in profiles of male scientists, and it says a good deal about the difference in what is taken for granted in each case.

What the sources do not quite settle

Documented

She earned her doctorate in astrophysics in 1992, at the Universidad de París.

The Universidad de Chile, her department and the press agree.

Documented

She received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias Exactas in 2021 and directed CONICYT's Astronomy Programme between 2007 and 2014.

Recorded by the Universidad de Chile.

Likely

She was born on 9 June 1955 in Santiago.

This detail appears only on the Spanish-language Wikipedia. No institutional or press source consulted publishes her date of birth.

Unconfirmed

Exactly where she did her master's degree.

The Universidad de Chile says both the undergraduate degree and the master's were done there, in 1976 and 1982. Cooperativa places the master's at Paris VII. The institutional version was preferred.
